✍️ Artist’s Note
삼신할매, 복숭아를 삼킨 뱀,
고추를 매단 금줄, 그리고 호랑이와 복숭아 등
삶의 시작을 둘러싼 기호들을 재해석했습니다.
삼신할매는 우리 민속에서 인간의 탄생과 운명을 관장하는 신으로,
세 명의 할머니가 임신, 출산, 그리고 아이의 생명을 지키는 역할을 합니다.
이처럼 삶의 근본이자 시작을 상징하는 존재로서,
탄생과 죽음의 경계에 놓인 이 작업의 중심에 두었습니다.
태몽은 새 생명의 도래를 알리는 신성한 상징으로,
복숭아는 불로장생과 생명의 힘을 뜻하며
호랑이는 강인함과 수호의 의미를 지닌 존재로서,
이 두 요소는 태몽 속에서 아이의 건강과 삶의 기운을 대변합니다.
꿈은 아이를 요람처럼 감싸 안으며,
삶과 죽음, 신성과 일상 사이 경계에서 흐르는 감각을 담아내고자 했습니다.
죽음과 탄생은 선명히 나뉘지 않고 경계를 넘나들며 맞닿아 있다고 느꼈습니다.
그 흐름 안에 꼭두 형상을 담아
관(棺)처럼 생긴 상자 속에 눕혔고,
그 안에는 요람을 상징하는 태몽의 이미지를 함께 놓았습니다.
삶과 죽음, 신성과 일상,
그 중간 어딘가에 존재하는 감각을
그레이쥬스만의 시선으로 담아낸 작업입니다.
I reinterpreted symbols surrounding the beginning of life—
the Samsin Halmoni (Three Birth Goddesses),
the snake swallowing a peach,
the chili-hung boundary rope,
and the tiger and peach.
Samsin Halmoni are deities in Korean folklore who govern birth and fate,
three grandmothers responsible for pregnancy, childbirth, and protecting the newborn’s life.
As such, they represent the foundation and beginning of life,
placed at the core of this work, which dwells on the boundary between birth and death.
Taemong (birth dreams) are sacred symbols heralding the arrival of new life.
The peach symbolizes immortality and life’s vitality,
while the tiger represents strength and protection.
These elements within the birth dream embody the child’s health and life energy.
The dream cradles the child like a cradle itself,
expressing a sensation that flows between life and death, the sacred and the mundane.
I felt that death and birth are not sharply divided,
but touch and cross their boundaries.
Within this flow, I placed a figure of a Gukdu (wooden mask figure),
laid in a box shaped like a coffin,
and inside it, an image of the birth dream symbolizing a cradle.
This work captures a sense existing somewhere between
life and death, sacred and everyday,
seen through GrayJuice’s unique perspective.
